Week 5 Term 2

Hello,

The boys and I have negotiated our Central Idea in Years 5 and 6 to meet the needs of both the IB and ACARA curriculum.  The Central Idea is the same but the lines of inquiry can differ to meet the needs and interests of the individual.  There has been some great discussions and lines already created.  The Year 6 Unit of Inquiry is ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ and the Central Idea is ‘Decisions influence society’.  Which will have a strong Civics and Citizenship focus and helps the students to explain the importance of people, institutions and processes to Australia’s democracy and legal systems.  It will allow us to explore the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizens and the obligation they may have as global citizens.  Fortunately the democratic process is in full swing dominating our news providing an excellent “tuning in” opportunities.   The Year 5 Unit of Inquiry’s theme is “How the World Works” and the Central Idea is “Living things adapt to survive.”   A more science based unit allowing students an opportunity to analyse how the form of living things enables them to function in their environment.  We will explore this further at the Zoo.  This is not just limited to animals, but has scope for all living things.  The due date is the end of the term, unless negotiated otherwise.

A few of the boys have discussed the current workload and we have been negotiating workloads depending on external and internal commitments.  I have asked boys to use their foresight to negotiate in advance as opposed to the day before, however I would still like to know before the due date given changes in circumstances or misinterpretations of their own expectations.

General philosophical discussions around the meaning of life have been brought up and some interesting dialogue and interpretations have been shared.  Feel free to explore further at the dinner table.

Have a good week and stay warm!
